Who Made WhatsApp

Jan Kuom and Brian Acton were working with Yahoo as an employee. They were keen to discover a new place for them. Both heaped savings and tried to take a chance to get lucky on Facebook but all in vain. Both said goodbye to their jobs and traveled around the world. But Facebook disappointed both of them. Brian Acton expressed his feelings by tweeting that Facebook turned him down.

It was an extraordinary chance for him to connect with fantastic people. Later on, they never lost hope.

How the idea of creating Whatsapp came into Kuom's Mind?

The fantastic idea of creating WhatsApp came into Kuom's mind when Apple launched its Apple store in 2009. The apple store was just a few months old. Jan Kuom understood the future of apps in the world. iPhone boosted him to create such an app, which is instant and hassle-free.

WhatsApp preplanning by Kuom

Jan Kuom thought that it is the market that was going to be grown. Kuom had decided to create such an app on which people can send instant messages and put statuses next to their names to express their activities and feelings. It could also show a person's availability or away etc.

He discussed his plan with his partner friend Acton. Acton agreed to do innovation. He needed an expert app developer to develop an app because he knew only programming, so he hired a developer from Russia on a freelance site.

First-time reactions of users

After the successful creation of the app, Kuom demonstrated the app to his friends within a month.

He named this app 'WhatsApp,' but his friends disagreed with him. Jan Kuom disappointed with it because there were many issues with Whatsapp, like battery draining, etc. He was sad due to this type of feedback. He wanted to hunt for a new job, but his friend Acton motivated him and asked him to work harder on this project.

Apple Vs. WhatsApp

Apple launched push notifications for the first time in June 2009. At that time, a few friends of Kuom's started using WhatsApp and found it funny because when someone would change its status, they get a notification.

At the end of October 2009, Kuom's contacted many ex-colleagues of him at Yahoo, and they collected a speed fund of 250000 Dollars for this project. So, Kuom became the founder of the WhatsApp project and got significant shares in the company.

Acton and Kuom Teamwork for WhatsApp

The teamwork of Kuom and Acton made Whatsapp successful. They wanted to make WhatsApp advertisement-free to make it different from all other apps. Both never did this for the fam.

In this business, Kuom was the company's CEO, while Acton managed everything with the proper management system.

WhatsApp First Staff Members

As we know, WhatsApp is one of the fastest-growing applications around the globe. So, it doesn't have many staff members or employees. The project started with two people, only Kuom's and Acton, and joined by the ex-Yahoo employee. Even in 2014, Whatsapp had a total of 55 staff members. Thirty-two people were working in the engineering department, and the rest in customer support.

Igor Solomennikov was among the first employees in WhatsApp. He is still working with WhatsApp.

Whatsapp hired Chris Peiffer, an old friend of Kuom, to make the blackberry version of Whatsapp.

Success Strategy of WhatsApp

Jan Kuom and Acton both were determined and enthusiastic about the project. Both worked at Yahoo, so they knew the game of advertisement well. They were against it and didn't follow the tricks to generate revenue.

How would you feel If you are talking to your loved ones and suddenly an ad pop up on the screen, is it not irritating for you? Right!

Both the founder and CEO of WhatsApp ready to generate revenue directly from users. They charged android users every year and iPhone users on the first time installation.

Acquisition of WhatsApp by Facebook

Facebook announced in 2014 that they are going to buy Whatsapp. The WhatsApp team demanded $16 billion following $4 billion cash and $12 billion in Facebook shares. Later on, Facebook acquired WhatsApp for $19.6 billion. It was the largest acquisition in the history of technology.

Jan Kuom and Acton became rich after this acquisition. Mark Zuckerburg spent one-tenth of his wealth on buying WhatsApp.

The question is why Facebook did it because they knew the growing capacity of Whatsapp and many other advertisement factors too.
